  • Toastmasters Meeting Summary 05/02/2019

Another week in the books! Here is your Big “D” Toastmasters meeting summary for May 02, 2019.

Theme – 70th Anniversary!

Big “D” Toastmasters – 70 Years!

Another week and another Toastmasters meeting. This week our Toastmaster was a first time Toastmasters, Bach. He did a great job of putting the evening together, even as two speakers had to find emergency replacements due to weather. (It was stormy this past week in Dallas!) The theme this week was the Big “D” 70th Anniversary. Be sure to check out our Club History page to learn more about the oldest club in Dallas.

There were quite a few guests who joined us this week, and they were treated to some amazing speeches. You should have been there!

Business Meeting

No major news to report from our Business Meeting. However, it was much less eventful that last week! One announcement to make here, the club will elect new officers on June 6th, 2019. Current members are encouraged to think about what role they would like to run for. An election for each officer position will be held.

Table Topics

Long time member, Andy, was our Table Topics master. He had great questions about why people joined Big “D” Toastmasters, and a few other speaking related questions. Some of the questions were

  • What was your reason for joining Big “D” Toastmasters?
  • Why do you keep coming back?
  • Who is your favorite speaker who is not a member of the club?
  • What bad speaking habits do you notice in others?

The Speeches

We had four great speakers this evening. Of course, we have great speakers every evening, so this is not out of the ordinary. We were treated to a mix of speeches by very experienced speakers. A special thank you to Gaurav and Zak who volunteered at the last moment to replace the speakers who couldn’t make it due to weather. (They got stuck in other cities.)

The first speaker this evening was Yolanda, who gave a speech that was new to many in the room. However, long time members got to see how Toastmasters has helped her, as she had given this speech before at our club. “Adventures in Babysitting” reminded us of what kids did for fun in the 1970’s. It also taught us how important it was to lock the door!

Our next speaker was Kathy, with her speech about advertising. We learned that many advertisements might not accurately portray the product they are promoting. In fact, some of them have (intended?) double meanings that might not be considered family friendly.

Gaurav, who stepped in at the last moment, gave his speech, “Why should I care?” While not a political speech, it did remind us that as American’s we should be taking our responsibility to vote much more seriously than statistics show. Examples were given of how the lack of voting could allow outside influences to vastly affect our country.

The final speaker of the evening was Zak. Unfortunately, your blog writer had to step out of the room during this speech. Thus we are unable to give a summary of the speech here.

New Members

We had no new members this week. However, some of our guests are looking to join in the next few weeks.
